About the PM7000 with Remote Communications

The PM7000 power quality analyser with Remote Cellular Communications offers seamless remote mobile communication using the built-in CAT-M1 modem and SIM card slot.

This cellular connectivity enables users to access live data and download full data sets of results without needing to visit sites for manual access.

Simply insert the SIM card into the front panel of the PM7000 analyser, position your antenna and use the PMScreen app to enable your modem. It will communicate with the server and automatically send accurate and detailed measurements (over 1000 parameters can be measured simultaneously) once recorded.

Visit PMGateway.online to start, stop and restart recordings as needed, and obtain up-to-date readings on the website dashboard of any of the channels recorded using our unique Adaptive Store recording technology.

Full data sets can be downloaded with a single click once a recording session has finished (or the unit restarted). Maintaining shorter recording sessions means regular full data updates since data measured sequentially can be concatenated with (joined onto) the previous session in our Pronto for Windows Software to be viewed and analysed collectively.

Unparalleled Benefits of Cellular/ Mobile Connectivity

  • Eliminate unnecessary site visits and associated costs (from truck maintenance and mileage to engineer hours) by remotely checking recordings before retrieval. Review data anytime, anywhere to determine if the target event has occurred or if configurations need adjustment.
  • Remotely start, stop and restart recordings to capture only required data for optimised storage efficiency. Control recordings remotely to gather just the data you need.
  • Interrogate the power quality monitoring analyser to view the latest on-site measurements on the PMGateway.online dashboard for up to 32 selected parameters. Get real-time insights without a site visit whilst downloading the full dataset when required.
  • Recordings are uploaded automatically to the secure, cloud-based PMGateway server upon completion for easy access and analysis from any location (Pronto Software required for full dataset analysis). Data is automatically archived and available for download. This seamless real-time access empowers smarter decisions and better allocation of resources.
  • Keep track of loggers by setting the logger location online for simplified asset management.
  • True remote instrument monitoring minimises the need for repeated and expensive engineer callouts, not to mention the time- and resource-saving benefits. Having this unrivalled remote analytics at your fingertips allows you to preserve valuable resources for more critical tasks.

The PM7000 utilises an advanced Cat-M1 (Also known as LTE-M or LTE Cat-M) modem and SIM card for remote cellular communication for power quality monitoring.

Outram Research decided on Cat-M1 as a flexible and optimised option for machine to machine communication. Cat-M1, along with NB-IoT are considered future-proof solutions akin to 5G connectivity, offering optimal energy-saving benefits and enhanced signal coverage both indoor and in rural areas (up to 1 Mbps). Cat-M1 can support roaming connections (if the SIM allows) and offers higher data speeds, lower latency and higher position accuracy over NB-IoT.

Cat-M1 connectivity provides an optimal balance of coverage, battery life, latency, and data speeds for IoT applications. Our power quality monitoring and communication hardware is designed for performance and reliability.

Supported SIMs include, but are not limited to (coverage dependent):

  • AT&T, Verizon, Hologram (USA)
  • O2, Vodafone, Conexa (UK)
  • One NZ, Sprint (New Zealand)

The SIM card is simply inserted into the slot on the PM7000 analyser front panel. An external antenna connector is provided for extending cellular range as needed.

Remote communication is enabled using the PM7000’s built-in user interface, PMScreen.

Once the SIM is authorised via a Bluetooth connection from an Android-enabled device, the analyser will automatically upload recordings to the secure PMGateway cloud server after completion.

Users can then utilise the PMGateway online portal to:

  • View analyser status and location
  • Start, stop, and restart recordings
  • Retrieve uploaded measurement data
  • Interrogate the analyser for real-time readings

This cutting-edge mobile connectivity enables users to optimise on-site data collection while minimising unnecessary trips and preserving expenses. For utilities and power quality professionals, it provides unmatched flexibility to gather exactly the right data at the right time.

With the help of the PM7000 cellular comms solution, valuable insights are at your fingertips, anytime and anywhere.

PM7000 Cellular Comms FAQs

As of this writing, the UK, US and New Zealand are the only regions where these units have been tested. The remote communications option is available worldwide and should work anywhere with CAT-M1 coverage. We’d recommend you consult with your local telecoms provider

At present, PMGateway.online is only available on our managed and secure AWS server. However, we are planning on extending PMGateway.online to utility providers to deploy onto their own servers in the near future.

Integral Cellular Remote Communication is available in the PM7000 and PM4000 Power Quality Analysers and the PM7000 Fault Level Monitor as well as their derivatives. Cellular Remote Comms are available in new units only.

All of our family of analysers with Bluetooth communication can also communicate remotely from their measurement point. Our PMGateway App (not to be confused with PMGateway.online) can be uploaded on an Android mobile phone* which can be left charging within Bluetooth distance of the Analyser. PMGateway, through the mobile phone, sends the data from the logger directly to an email or Dropbox account.

*An Android mobile phone preloaded with the PMGateway app, along with a nondescript phone safety box, with temperature sensor, are available for purchase.

You can also use the PMGateway App (as above) with PM7000s as they come with Bluetooth as standard. It is also possible to connect over a USB cable or Ethernet cable.

Buy or Hire a Cellular Remote Comms-Enabled Analyser

Due to the uniqueness of the product, some providers prefer to hire a unit before committing to a purchase. We can offer up to two weeks of hire fees off the analyser’s list price if you buy within a month.

Our engineering services department will also be happy to visit your site to conduct a power quality, harmonics or fault level measurement for you if preferred.

If you would like to buy or hire a PM7000 (or PM7000FLM to measure your Prospective Fault Level) please get in touch with your local distributor, call Outram directly on +44 1243 573050 or email sales@outramresearch.co.uk.

The analyser did everything that we needed. We were also impressed with how quickly it got across the US.

The analyser did everything that we needed. Rob was surprised at how easily it went on.

We were also impressed with how quickly it got across the US. It was there before we even left [the UK] and we didn’t expect that to happen.

It’s a specialised subject and the support we received from Duncan was second to none.

Chris Brookes, Simpson and Wood, UK Feb 2019

…PM3000 is the best product in my shop

The reason I think your PM3000 is the best product in my shop is the reliability and the software. I use 5 different brands of recorders and this one by far has been the most reliable. The software updates are great, with the 60 day reminders. The layout of the software and every single function make it simple and user friendly unlike most products.

Greg Ellis, Electrical District #3, Arizona USA, 2014

I have used data loggers in the past… Not in the same league as the Outram equipment

Thank you for all your fantastic efforts yesterday.

I have used data loggers in the past but they were not in the same league as the Outram equipment.

Last December when Network Rail asked me to install PQ monitoring I looked at hiring a couple of [competitor] PQ monitors. I had a Network Rail Graduate alongside me and I thought it would be a good learning exercise for him. As I began to understand the railway electrification system I realised [these] were a non-starter, so when the local electricity board ‘turned the screw’ I decided to look deeper.

I discovered Outram and when I read about your collaboration with Scottish Power I immediately realised the Outram equipment was the only one to consider. From what I have seen since yesterday morning I know I was correct in contacting your company.

The Outram PM7000FLM … software made analysis of fault-current straightforward

We found the Outram PM7000FLM useful for capturing data, and its software made analysis of fault-current straightforward. Other methods of data capture can be used, but would require further development to accurately give fault level information; the area where the FLM scores is its ease of use, and also that statistical analysis is applied over the whole test period, rather than at a ‘snapshot’ of one event as our analysis. This makes it less prone to noise and other disturbances on the system.
