APPNOTE: Setting up the backlight on a PDA for use with PmScreen

The information in this article applies to:

  • A Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) when used with a Power Master PM1000, PM2000 and PM7000 Loggers.

This article is aimed at:

  • All Users of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) with the PM1000, PM2000 or PM7000.

Summary

The PM1000, PM2000 and PM7000 do not have a built in display. The user interface is displayed remotely either on a personal computer or on a Personal Digital Assistant using a special piece of software called PmScreen.
This application note details the steps required to adjust the backlight settings on your PDA.

Before you start:

Check PmScreen is installed on your PDA, see APPNOTE: Installing PmScreen on a PDA.

Check which mobile operating system you have on your PDA (to find out which mobile operating system you have: on the Start screen of your PDA click on the Start button then select Settings from the menu. On the System tab select the item About).

Adjusting the Backlight

Changing the backlight timeout period

For Windows Mobile 6.0 or 5.0:
Click on Start – Settings.
Select the System tab.
Click on Brightness.
Select the Battery Power tab.
Set or clear the Dim if device is idle for more than checkbox and change the time interval as desired.

For Windows Mobile 2003 (including second edition).
Click on Start – Settings.
Select the System tab.
Click on Backlight.
Select the Battery Power tab.
Set or clear the Turn off backlight if device is not used for checkbox and change the time interval as desired.

Changing the system turn off period

For Windows Mobile 6.0, 5.0, and Windows Mobile 2003 (including second edition).
Click on Start – Settings.
Select the System tab.
Click on Power.
Select the Advanced tab.
Set or clear the Turn off device if not used for checkbox and change the time interval as desired.

Keeping the Backlight on when running PmScreen

With PmScreen running, click on the Edit menu then select Options and Backlight Stays On.
PmScreen then overrides the backlight timeout and system turn off periods and forces the PDA to stay on with the screen illuminated (until the battery is exhausted).
