Summary
The Monitor Data Memory (MDM) file contains the raw recording data extracted from a Ranger Logger.
The file format is optimised for internal use inside a Logger and for data transfer.
Pronto for Windows decodes MDM files into Project (.PDB) files before graphing or generating reports on the data.
This application note discusses the naming conventions and storage folders used when MDM files are extracted from a Logger.
MDM files storage and naming.
Direct Downloads.
When using Pronto to download data from a Logger (over USB / Ethernet / RS232 etc.) extracted MDM files are typically stored in C:\Pronto4w\DataFile
The file name uses a YYMMDDNN.MDM naming convention, where:
YY is the two digit year
MM is the two digit month (1 -> 12)
DD is the two digit day of the month (1 -> 31)
NN is the Download Number, starts at “00” each day then increments for each download.
This naming convention simplifies finding a file downloaded on a particular date in a file listing.
For example: First download on the 11th June 2026 would be named:
26061100.MDM
Second download on the same day would be named:
26061101.MDM
Downloading via a USB Flash Drive.
When the Logger copies the file into a USB flash drive the above naming convention is used with the MDM saved separate subdirectory for each Logger.
For example: a file copied onto a Flash drive from PM7000 serial number 1234 would be here:
X:\PM7S1234\26061100.MDM
where X is the drive letter (typically D: or E:).
When importing this MDM from a USB Flash drive, Pronto first copies it to the DataFile folder here:
C:\Pronto4w\DataFile\PM7S1234\26021100.MDM
Before importing the data.
Downloading an email from PMGateway for Android.
When PMGateway for Android extracts the MDM file from the Logger the file uses a longer file name based on the serial number and start time of the recording.
For example, a file recorded in PM7000 serial number 1234 a recording that started on 11th June 2026 at 12:01:02 would be named:
PM7S1234-20260611-120102.MDM
